Tepoztlán, just over an hour's journey south of Mexico City, in the state of Morelos, is a beautiful little town in the middle of the national park and surrounded by rocky mountains. The town, not only famous for its ice cream shop, boasting 100 flavours, is the site of an ancient pyramid that is mounted atop the mountain. After an hour's sleep thanks to the free bar at the casino the night before in Mexico City, we began the ascent up the mountain, scrambling over rocks through the woodland at about half 10 in the morning, aiming to beat the sun to the top. It felt like we were struggling up an endless path, since the only clue as to how far off the finish we were, was how close the sky appeared. Eventually, after climbing frr a very long time, we reached the top, and it was all totally worth it. The view literally took my breath away. It doesn't show up that well on the photos but the view of the strangely shaped mountains was incredible. Plus, we were all chuffed to bits to have actually made it! Here are some pictures of the journey and the top:
Upon our descent, after eating and wandering round the market, we went to the top attraction: Tepoznieves. I tried tequila; cucumber and chilli; cheese; avocado; rum and pineapple and many more. I would definitely say that the cheese and avocado flavours were the worst (as to be expected) and I could definitely not eat more than a tiny spoonful, but the rum & pineapple was amazing, and they had loads of special mixes involving rose petals, white chocolate, nuts, fruit - you name it.
So a very well spent trip to Morelos. Great start to travelling this year and a brilliant way to splash out and spend the wages I'd just (finally) been paid!
